Yet More Filler

Posted by Jeff on Wednesday, 31 May, 2006

After a shitty last couple of days (see Dawn’s blog for details), I just feel blah. So, as such, just in a blatantly gratuitous effort to drive traffic to the site, here are all the search terms that hit here in the last 48 hours…

simeon park near: toronto on
crazy 8 film festival, vancouver, 2006
gatorade sydney crosby
impossible trivia
the lonely shepherd
asexual marriage online dating
crazy eights film festival
bride and best man sex
clemson university wedding family names
lighting warrior msn myspace
wedding groom tapes pictures to 300 chai
“jeff golden” and “camera”
davinci trivia

Well, at least the list doesn’t contain the tawdry terms that usually lead you to this site.

That is all.

Oilers in 5

Posted by Jeff on Saturday, 27 May, 2006

Last Wednesday, I made this post, stating the obvious that Edmonton was Canada’s last hope of bringing the Holy Grail home.

Peter, a dear friend, in a short but sweet effort to rile my feathers (well, if I was a bird) and take the piss, made this statement:

Ducks eliminate Oilers in 6 games.

To which I had this rebuttal:

I see the scars still run deep. Honestly, Detroit sorely needs a playoff goalie. Like Hasek or Vernon were. Oilers in 5.

Tonight, Edmonton beat Anaheim 2-1, to win the series 4 games to 1, which, surprise surprise, is five games, and Edmonton is now Western Conference Champions, headed for the final leg to win the Grail.

To Peter, I hope you did not wager any funds on the Western Conference Finals. You’ve got to fly out to Vancouver yet and enjoy some beers ;)

That is all.

Why haven’t I quit yet?

Posted by Jeff on Friday, 26 May, 2006

Back in November, well October really, the financial reality of the Vancouver film market began to hit me and it became increasingly obvious that I needed a second source of income until the monsoon season subsided. And, seeing as how doing shitty little labour jobs for $9/hr in the torrential rainfall really was a last resort, I found a job at the big blue box, Best Buy. If anything, I figured at least I’d be out of the rain. Read the rest of this entry »

The Grail Comes Home

Posted by Jeff on Wednesday, 24 May, 2006

Though a heart attack for Canadians like myself, obsessed with ending the 13 year absence of a Stanley Cup Champion in Canada, I am thoroughly happy that Edmonton beat the Ducks, AGAIN, leading them three nil. Edmonton is a shoe in to the final now, barring Anaheim being the third team in NHL history to come from behind 3-0.

So what are Edmonton’s chances? Being the season following the strike, we have seen again and again there are no certainties. The Cup is still up for grabs, whoever Edmonton faces. But bear the following in mind:

1. Edmonton has been to the cup final six times, and they became Stanley Cup Champions five of them.
2. From my favourite golf site, a poll has Edmonton as a 64.86% favourite to clinch the Holy Grail. It’s far from scientific or accurate, but from my experience, there are vast groups of people on the planet who don’t need fact to create belief. In fact belief may be contrary to fact.

Oh Canada!

da Vinci’s Opening Weekend

Posted by Jeff on Tuesday, 23 May, 2006

What makes a good movie these days? Film school training says above all else, story and acting. Mainstream Hollywood, however, creates the argument for high film revenues. Where myself, and the other lovers of film would put films such as The Godfather, The Godfather, Part II, Citizen Kane, Mulholland Drive, and Le Violin Rouge high on my list, Hollywood would in turn also place films such as Shrek 2, Jurassic Park, and Home Alone in the same league, if not better, as the afforementioned has yielded a better box office.

Now this weekend, amidst slamming reviews about it’s storytelling and not content, The da Vinci Code had a killer weekend at the box office, grossing $224 million US over the weekend. This is second all time next to Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. As for the film, and my take on it, I still thought the film worked. Ian McKellan stole the show as Leigh Teabing, who made me laugh harder when he took the piss out of Langdon (Hanks) at the gate, even harder than when I read it in the novel. The film does change Langdon’s spin somewhat, but for those of us who think it through, we can see why. Nobody wants a holy war at a Cineplex. As for the critics, I think they need their eyes and ears checked. And maybe the odd one might show some spine to their editor whilst they are at it.

What does this mean?

1. Jesus is at best second fiddle to the Sith and the power of the dark side.
2. The da Vinci Code has to be a good film by Hollywood standards.
3. Could this be the precusor to the real war, starting on the 26TH of May?

That is all.

Damn Near Freakin’ Impossible Trivia

Posted by Jeff on Sunday, 21 May, 2006

Ahh, yes, ten years back, when I joined the work force, one thing kept my sanity on the early drives to work. The former alternative, then progressive rock, now just the cute little edge station in Toronto, 102.1 the edge. Well, a good 4,500 km out of range, and now I must find a new station that plays a lot of my old “alternative” favorites.

Enter CFOX. The music selection rocks, but the contests kick even more ass. During our mild, dry winters (yeah right… Vancouver is monsoon country), we had Naked for the ‘Nucks, where contestants would phone in, from a public location, stark naked (with 3rd party visual confirmation), and then have to answer a trivia question to win Canucks tickets for the game in GM Place that night. Definitely couldn’t get away with that in Toronto. No Leaf fan has that spirit.

Now we have trivia. But not just regular trivia. Not impossible. Just damn near freakin’. We’re at 34 questions (a new question and prize are added daily, to which callers must answer all), and still nobody can answer them ALL.

Can you? Here they are (date question added included):

Apr 3 - Which animal’s fingerprints are most like humans?
Apr 4 - 1 in 9 high school boys does this for money at least once a week. What is it?

All I need now are lesbians

Posted by Jeff on Friday, 19 May, 2006

Yes, it has only been a week since I posted this highly edgy comment. However, in one week, I have gotten more comments on it than I usually do on this whole blog in a week. Also, the hit counter has gone off the normal scale, from the 20 or so hits per day to a one day high of 123. Woo hoo for ratings on this load of tripe.

I feel I must give some backstory here. Back when I lost my blogger’s virginity, I saw the blogs of some of my phrenz, and noticed they had all sorts of wonderful comments praising the tripe they were posting, as it were a new gospel. Not being a social giant, jealousy ensued. Needless to say I had to come to terms that I was not the social butterfly, and posting mindless tripe was not my forte by any stretch of the imagination.

My lack of audience allowed me to post about virtually anything without fear of a flame war existing on my site. Then last week. Whenever I write something positive, nobody pays attention. As soon as I challenge the right wing, every Tom, Dick and Harry from the right come crawling out of the woodwork and try to change my opinion on things in a crusade-like effort. And in the last few weeks, it hit me.

I should take the Howard Stern approach. When he started being himself and not giving a fuck, he got ratings. Now all I need are lesbians. Because Howard learned early, “lesbians equals ratings”.

Though this blog really is for me. As I will be posting a disclaimer, finally, and soon, I will say this. What I say is what I say. You won’t change it, nor be able to get me to remove it. If you don’t like it, go away.

Now, as for what I’m going to enjoy later in the day. One of two films I have been looking forward too all winter. And no, it’s not See No Evil starring Kane.

Obviously, it’s The da Vinci Code. The movie based on a wonderful work of fiction by a great writer, Dan Brown, who makes many claims that are definitavely contadictory to Christian scriptures and the nature of Jesus.

Now, instead of making a load of comments agreeing or disagreeing with either text, I shall just ask a series of questions.

1. If one of the purposes of the bible is to serve as a historical documentation, and Christ is written to be divine, would it not support the divinity notion that his chastity caused outrage in the Jewish community would only continue to support the divine son of the Lord? Or is it that no documentation ever existed. And if none did, was it due to no public outcry to be fruitful and multiply? Or rather that Jesus was being fruitful and multiplying?

2. Why are so many devout Christians in fear of a concept from a work of fiction that of causing a major shift in faith? Is their faith really as strong as they say, or is it a smear campaign to silence contradictory viewpoints?

3. What were da Vinci’s motives in the various paintings discussed in the books? Was he just painting religiously commissioned works for pay, or was there artistic licence within them? Is the point of art to reflect beauty only, or to also inspire individual thought?

I could go on, but I’m sure you should get the point.

That is all.
