A Golden World

I’m a screw up. Try to keep that in mind.

Finally, clever uses for celluloid

I never thought I’d see it in the month that starts the summer blockbusters, May, but we actually have some good films coming out this month. When films like Capote, Batman Begins, Crash, The Corpse Bride, and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith represent all the films for the last 12 months that caught my attention, this May brings a breath of fresh air.

The facts? Currently playing in theatres, we have The Rocket. Opening tomorrow is Art School Confidential, directed by Terry Zwigoff, which has piqued my curiosity. Next weekend has Posieden, which Dawn is quite interested in, though I wonder how much story exists behind the flash. Well, it’s a remake, which does not leave me with strong feelings. Hi Dawn! But nothing will beat my rush to the theatre for The Da Vinci Code, a film based on a piece of literary fiction (the book of the same title), which debunks another piece of fiction (the Bible). I also want to stir some shit if religious groups show up protesting at the theatres. Wish me luck.

Though the best is saved for last, as the long strip of celluloid that Dawn is dreading, X-Men: The Last Stand finally hits theatres. I think she’s just going along with the same hope I have… that the end credits will bear my name. I just personally hope she does pay attention and actually let the brilliance of the story grow on her. I could also hope to get my paranoid mother to ride an airtram to the top of Grouse Mountain (she’s deathly scared of heights).

One can only hope the quality of films continues throughout the year, as Hollywood, ever desperate for the next $200 million film, are remaking the following this year (amongst other remakes):

Miami Vice
The Shaggy Dog
She’s the Man
Get Smart
I Dream of Jeannie

It’s official. Hollywood is low on the idea list. But yet there’s loads of independent film ideas. Maybe Hollywood has been to corrupted by corporate and political America, and is just a strong wheel of the propaganda machine. I mean honestly, how many times can the likes of Will Ferrell tell the same stupid joke before audiences stop laughing?

That is all.
