Is ignorance really bliss?

“The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation.”
Pierre Elliott Trudeau

But somehow, that sentiment is lost on one Stephen Harper. As last year, now former Prime Minister Paul Martin took another step forward beyond decriminalizing same sex relationships, going as far as legalizing same sex unions. Harper, claiming pressure from conservative and religious elements within his party, is now revisitng the bill with a free vote, ie one that if defeated would not jeopardize his minority government, as to whether or not to pursue re-opening the issue.

To which I ask, WHAT ISSUE? It is obvious in a free society that Trudeau’s statement is 100% true. And Canada, being a multicultural society, must also exist as a secular state, which means thusly religious groups also have no right in the bedrooms of all Canada’s citizens.

Well, I then read this letter sent into the Metro News, which was published yesterday:

Re: “Social justice course added to curriculum.” Some politicians are trying to pollute the quality of education by introducing a gay and homosexual agenda into the school system. I don’t want my children to learn anything that is contrary to what our family values have been built upon for many centuries. I come from a nature-oriented traditional culture and I fear God and also believe in culture and tradition. I do not want someone to tell or teach my children anything that will want them to accept the contrary. Why don’t you build gays only schools and introduce their agenda there so it does not spread to other people who do not want part of it.
— S. MENSAH, VIA E-MAIL

Wow. Harsh. I suppose S. Mensah would like to build a ghetto, put all the gays and lesbians there, and be able to ignore them. To which I ask simply this. What is it you fear from gays and lesbians anyhow? Do you subscribe to the nonsensical belief of some gay bashers that same sex attraction is some form of a disease? Are you close minded enough to believe that anything that goes against your basic point of view must then be completely and utterly wrong? Or could it be this:

That deep down, perhaps subconsciously, you have learned that homophobia is a step towards your own realization that you harbour attractions to members of the same gender?

When I was in university, we had some frank and serious discussions about gay and lesbian relationships, which all boiled down to being treating all people, whether creed, colour, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation as equals. True tolerance. Are you then saying you don’t accept a stance of tolerance? In a multicultural country, you don’t respect tolerance? Sounds to me like them’s fighting words. Does the name Custer ring a bell?

That is all.
