I’m a screw up. Try to keep that in mind.

The small round black thing… that’s the puck

Posted by Jeff on Thursday, 15 November, 2007

Something we should convince Vinny Vigneualt and the rest of the ‘Nucks of sometimes. Actually I can’t complain too much. The defensive support for Luongo in last night’s game was the best I’ve seen all season. Sad we only came out of the match with a single.

Still, after going to my first live match since moving to the rainy city (and Dawn’s first ever), some thoughts definitely have entered my mind in and around last night’s festivities:

1. There’s a new Luongo bobblehead. I hope I can get it at our usual collectables vendor, and avoid a weekend trip to Authentix.

2. Merchandise is reasonably priced (relative to purchase at non-stadium locations).

3. Food is overpriced.

4. It is cheaper to buy coffee from Starbucks or Blenz than it is from GM Place ($3.00 per cup… yikes).

5. It’s $8.00 for a pint of Rickards Red. The percentage markup for beer is less than that for coffee.

6. Coiler fans are lame. But my Gods, it’s fun to chant ‘Oilers suck’ as the sad lot of travelling fans march through the sea of blue and green to find their seats.

7. It’s great having a Cookie Monster on your team. Let’s just hope he doesn’t start freebasing cookie dough during intermissions.

8. Bobby Lu may have to be a thirty goal scorer if we want to run deep into the playoffs. I’m sure we’ll gel by mid-season, but somebody’s gotta spark the guns.

9. Though I normally opposed shoot-outs, seeing them live definitely is a rush. Though why we didn’t send either Sedin or Naslund out for the shootouts puzzles me.

10. Vancouverites in general just don’t get my blunt, obtuse and generally irreverant humour. Exiting the stadium, it was raining (go fig). I made my typical, snide, “raining in Vancouver… NOOOOO” to which some brain dead git, passing by said, with an air of either snottiness or anger “then this isn’t the city for you.” I didn’t know bodies could be kinetic with a vacuum occupying the entire six inches between the ears.

And to that dude, in case you couldn’t tell, I WAS BEING SARCASTIC. Not that he’d read this. Well, okay, not that he’d be able to read.

That is all.

Sick and the like

Posted by Jeff on Monday, 12 November, 2007

Hence the shortage of posting this past week. Not that I’ve really been up to the task in the last few months anyway.

Though it’s a day late, yesterday was Rememberance Day. And since I really don’t ever have the words to remember those who laid down their lives for us to go on, I’ll just leave this:

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-191 8)
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Vimy Poppy

Also, this weekend was quite bittersweet as I got to see my cousin Warren, up from San Francisco this weekend. It was the first time I’ve seen family in close to three years. In ways it seems like yesterday, in ways it seems forever. It got me thinking about those I’ve lost, those I’ve lost touch with, and just those I haven’t seen. And too them I leave these words:

WANDER MY FRIENDS
Bear McCreary

(English translation)
Wander my friends, wander with me
Like the mist on the green mountain, moving eternally
Despite our weariness, we’ll follow the road
Over hills and valleys, to the end of the journey

Come on my friends and sing with me
Fill the night with joy and sport
Here’s a health to the friends who have gone from us
Like the mist of the green mountain, gone forever.

That is all.

A message to all scum…

Posted by Jeff on Wednesday, 7 November, 2007

In response to one of my earlier anti-United bias posts, some scum posted this:

“When? I ask when? liverpool are never ever going to win the FA Premier League!! ManUnited<3 = 9 TIMES!!!!!”

Now, just to kill the Todd factor, yes, I’m aware this may be some high end diversionary tactic for spam, though only a plausable email was left, and a non-website. As such, being the aspiring editor I am (okay it’s film, but hey) I edited his website to read the new address for what is formerly http://ihateronaldo.com. But to be honest, this reply seems consistent with the typical anti-scouse attack these gits who aren’t even from Manchester can muster.

Yes, you can expect similar levels of educated response when attacking Leaf or Red Sox fans about their teams. True, Man U has been dominant mopping up against teams in relegation from the Premier League, but they fall short in Europe. Maybe those scum are so short sited to realize there are internationals short of the Euros and World cup play. Maybe there’s just too much shit from the ugly likes of Rooney, Ronaldo, and the dead spare of Herman Munster, Gary Neville. And you know what we should do with shit…

Man U put shit in the bin

That is all.

No Sunlight Today

Posted by Jeff on Tuesday, 6 November, 2007

Arrive at work before the sun rises, leave after it sets… you know, if I didn’t actually drive for my job, I’d never see the sun until April or so. Not that the sun makes any appearences through the perpetual Vancouver rain clouds.

Which got me thinking about reality programming, funnily enough. Now for me, film school grad and classically educated man, thinks of one thing with reality. Documentary. And not Michael Moore style. Cinema verite. Watch 9-11 or Salesman to get what I mean.

But still, for ‘reality based’ series, there are a few winners. Gene Simmons Family Jewels, Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares (UK), and Hell’s Kitchen to name a few. But none top…

Kenny vs. Spenny

13 straight episodes of Kenny Hotz kicking the shit out of Spencer Nolan Rice, season 4 premiering tonight (in ten minutes, better hurry). Even our differently brained neighbours get the shows now (I think on Comedy Central, though I’m not sure and too lazy to Google it at the moment). Mind you, they’re further edited for language and offensive content, so the best they get is Kenny vs. Spenny light (which is akin to season 1, funnily enough).

As for an outside guess, I say Kenny takes an easy 10 competitions this year. But honestly, how much fight can you get from a punching bag anyway?

That is all.

The week that sure wasn’t

Posted by Jeff on Sunday, 4 November, 2007

My Gods, I hate writer’s block. I gotta find a healthy fix for it before some big production hires me as a writer (mind you I have to find out how to crack that side of the industry yet). Yet there has been very little for inspiration around these parts. Corporate pressure to pay to go to their own Christmas party (I wonder if they just realize how Christian I ain’t). Loads of rain. Well, it is approaching winter. When payday is the only highlight, you know you need a change.

Luckily, yesterday I did notice something. Nothing terribly unusual, though it did stand out. I got a shelving unit at Ikea yesterday, though ran short on appropriate wall mounts for it. And with Rona just down the road, off I walked. Now for a little context. I live in Surrey. It has a reputation around these parts as being rough, crime ridden, and full of undesirables (including myself… bwahahahahah). And though the drug crime is the worst in Whalley, Newton (well at least the part of Newton I’m in) seems to have loads of hookers. In fact, some frequent our building, and one is on a corner of our block. Conveniently close to Rona, to boot. And she is far from being easy on the eyes.

Needless to say, I passed by her on my jaunt to get wall plugs. And as I did, a car pulled up beside her, and the two engaged in conversation. Not concerning myself, I went, made my purchase, and in the five minutes, she had left her corner, arguably with that same individual. It’s way closer than I’ve ever been to that type of ‘transaction’ before.

It brings me back to a conversation Dawn and I had a week or so back with the security guard in our building. So much shit goes on in our neighbourhood without our notice. And nothing like a little humdrum in the own life to make you look at what’s going on around you.

That is all.
